I usually travel home for Christmas to spend the holiday with my mom but I have only one week of vacation this year so we decided to drive to Austria instead. (Don’t worry, mom, I am coming for Easter. 🙂 )
It is the first time that we are in the mountains for Christmas and it is definitely much nicer than for New Year’s Eve. The town is empty and quiet. The slopes are not so crowded.
I can’t ski, I tried it many years ago several times but I gave up. Many people ask me what I am doing in the mountains if I don’t ski. Bad Hofgastein is my favorite winter place as non-skier and we come here every year for over 10 years. There are so many things to do that I am not bored for even a second.
Take walks in the winter wonderland
The park in the town center is very nice and there is a nice long walking path all the way to Bad Gastein.
Go to the top of the mountain
Pedestrians can take the lift all the way up to the top of the mountains where there is a restaurant and a large terrace. I just sit in the sun and read whole day.
Ice skate
The ice skating rink can be used for free and I normally pack in my ice skates but you can also rent some for just a few euros. There is ice disco every Monday evening.
Relax in the spa
The Alpentherme is in the middle of the town and it’s perfect for swimming and relaxing, plus I do the free aqua gym classes as well.
Enjoy the Austrian cousine
Go shopping
What else?
- Nordic skiing
- Snow shoe hiking with the official guide every Tuesday
- Enjoy the Christmas market in the evening
- Enjoy some wine, antipasti and other foods at my favorite Italian restaurant
Last but not least, Bad Hofgastein is dog-friendly so you can bring your puppy too. 🙂
